New Haven: J.M. Patten, 1842. Hardcover. 8vo. Three-quarter red leather with gilt spine lettering and decorative paper over boards. 54pp. Very good. Mild bit of edgewear; last few pages age toned. Item #8478
First edition and apparently this minister's first appearance in print. Three discourses by the controversial pastor of the Chapel Street Congregational Church and abolitionist (1819-79), defending Biblical precedents for capital punishment. A tight, attractive copy and quite scarce. Chapel Street Congregational Church was Thompson's first gig (1840-45) before going on to greater fame as long-time pastor of New York's famed Broadway Tabernacle Church (1845-71). Not in Sabin.
