This major general of cavalry in the Union Army during the Civil War continued right up through the Spanish-American war, then became the first Military Governor of the Philippines. Item #52890
Large and bold signature on a lined 4" X 1½", slip, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Accompanied by a 6" X 9" steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Cavalry Officers" (a plate from John S.C. Abbott's 1863-66 "History of the Civil War in America"), which features 9 small head-and-shoulders portraits in uniform, each set within an oval border. Sheridan appears at center somewhat larger, surrounded by Kilpatrick, Wilson, Custer, Stoneman, Pleasanton, Merritt, Averill and Grierson. Very good. Mild age toning and wear.
