During the Civil War this politician and military officer served briefly as major general in charge of the Department of Maryland and the East; in 1861, as treasury secretary, he is credited with saying, "If anyone attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot!"; other offices include serving New York in the U.S. Senate (1845-49), U.S. Minister to France (1866-69) and governor of New York (1873-74). Bold and handsome "John A. Dix / Maj. Genl." penned in brown ink on a lined 5" X 2¼" slip, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Minor mounting traces on verso. Accompanied by a 5 3/4" X 9" steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Union Generals" (a plate from John S.C. Abbott's 1863-66 "History of the Civil War in America"), which features 9 small head-and-shoulders portraits, each set within an oval border. Dix appears at center somewhat larger. A lovely signature with excellent period portrait.
