Item #52868
Tight and attractive first combined edition of these early Ade efforts, a volume in this publisher's "Chicago in Fiction" series. "Artie" (1896) and "Pink Marsh" (1897) first appeared in Ade's "Chicago Record" daily humor column, "Stories of the Streets and of the Town," often with his friend and colleague McCutcheon's illustrations. This special copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the blank leaf facing the title page is a unique frontispiece -- a 3½" X 2" heavy stock card boldly inscribed and signed in thick brown ink by the then-39-year-old author: "Sincerely, / George Ade / Oct 4 -- 1905." Very good. Lightly age toned, and Ade slightly smeared the "Oc." A most unusual copy with early signature from the popular and prolific Indiana humorist, writer and playwright (1866-1944).
