Superb and tight first edition of this scholarly study -- and with handsome vintage ephemeral addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a near fine heavy stock 4" X 6" steel engraving depicting a heroic statue of Allen in uniform, right arm about to pull the sword from its scabbard. While no images of Allen survive, Vermont native Benjamin H. Kinney was commissioned to produce a marble statue of Allen and this wooden preliminary version was the result. In 1853 it appeared as the frontispiece to Henry Walter De Puy’s book “Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Heroes of ’76” and is now missing, making this the only known likeness of this statue.
