N.p. [Madison]: Wisconsin History Commission, 1911. Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter vellum with gilt spine lettering with gilt and brown paper over boards with black front board lettering. xiii, 255pp. Map frontispiece, five maps. Very good. Tight and internally fine, with only mild binding wear. Item #52706

First edition, tight and nice, limited to 2500 copies; No. 4 in this commission's "Original Papers" series. Hassler critiques Fitch as "Gracelessly written and only lightly documented," but also observes it is "nevertheless, a useful account." Front pastedown bears bookplate of W.A. Olen (1875-1971), a well-known Wisconsin industrialist and long-time president of innovative Clintonville, Wisconsin auto manufacturer FWD (Four Wheel Drive Auto Company); title page bears a circular blind-embossed Clintonville library imprint and no other markings. A sharp copy with interesting provenance. NEVINS I, 29.
