Item #52561 William Caxton: An English Printer. William CAXTON.

William Caxton: An English Printer.

(CAXTON, William).

San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1934. Broadside. 16" X 12½". Bifolium. Very good. Minor edgewear, with small mounting trace on colophon leaf. Item #52561

Handsome broadside by the celebrated fine press printer John Hanry Nash whose rear colophon leaf (featuring Caxton's famous printer's device) notes that the Zellerbach Paper Company "is presenting this Keepsake to Friends and Patrons as evidence of its faith in the present and future of our nation...." Opening with a huge initial capital "P" and the sentiment "Probably no Englishman has rendered greater aid to English than Willilam Caxton," this celebratory statement eulogizes England's first printer (1422-91) and notes his first productions of 1476. American printer and typography historian Henry Lewis Bullen (1857-1938) wrote this "New Light on William Caxton" in 1928 and it is here "Rewritten." Accomplished in a heavy Gothic typeface and printed on laid Zellerbach stock with "Alexandra" watermark.
