Item #52518 Autograph Letter Signed. James BRYCE, 1st Viscount Bryce.

Autograph Letter Signed.

The seasoned Irish-born politician held many high-level posts in the English government, capping his career as the notable British Ambassador to the United States (1907-13), but is often remembered as a historian and as author of many book, namely the influential 1888 "The American Commonwealth." Item #52518

ALS, 4pp (lettersheet), 4 3/4" X 7½", Washington, DC, 2 March 1911. Addressed to Mr. Wadhams [?]. Very good. Single hole punch at upper left (not affecting text) and minor mounting trace at gutter of final leaf. On "British Embassy, / Washington" letterhead, the newly-minted ambassador (only in office since February) writes an assistant of some sort: "It suddenly turns out that I may be unable to go on to Canada on the 9th; and therefore I send this line to you at once to beg you to do nothing further regarding tickets or sleeping car reservations for Mrs. Bryce & myself & the rest of our party.... I trust however to come to you to Albany on the 9th, as I assume that all the arrangements for the Dinner have been made for that night...." Goes on and on with details about his travel plans, signing off in full. Boldly penned and fairly legible despite his hurried scrawl.
