Item #52516 Inscribed Color Photograph Signed. Mickey SPILLANE.

Inscribed Color Photograph Signed.

The "King of Pulp Fiction" was a hardcore crime novelist who cranked out his best known and bestselling novel "I, the Jury" in about a week in 1947 and in it introduced his most famed character, detective Mike Hammer a dozen more Hammer titles followed until 1996, along with other series. Item #52516

ICPS, 5" X 7", n.p., n.y. Fine. Undated, but likely of 1990s vintage. The Hammer novels inspired the television series "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer" (1957-59), and Johnson outboard motors became one of its sponsors, and while Spillane is remembered for his long-running Miller Lite beer commercials, Spillane (who lived ni a beach town in South Carolina) was a natural spokesman for that company's print advertisements. This promotional photograph depicts Spillane later in life standing alongside a Johnson outboard motor wearing a "Johnson Outboards" t-shirt; the caption "The Best Run the Best" appears above the image. In the blank lower margin, he boldly inscribes and signs in black fineline: "Hi -- Best regards from / Mike Hammer and me! / Mickey Spillane." This image is invariably inscribed with references to boating and water sports -- this choice inscription naming his iconic character is quite out of the ordinary.
