The sixth, thirteenth and seventeenth governor of the Colony of Rhode Island (1676-77, 1686 and 1696-98) was the son of an earlier governor from a prominent Quaker family; he was the first native-born governor; he served that colony as deputy governor and in other capacities. Item #52514
ADS, 1p, 6" X 3", Newport, RI, 29 [ ? ] 1695. Very good. On lightly age toned laid paper and penned in bold iron gall ink (that burns through one lower case "o"), Clark here records having (verbatim) "Reseved of Grt. [ ? ] of dartmouth the Some of Six ponds in mony for amount and [ ? ] of John Hussey of hamton I says Reseved by me." Signed large and bold by him at the close and dated from Newport. Challenging to decipher, with creative spelling variations typical of the day. It's feasible but far from certain that "John Hussey" may have been the noted Quaker minister and assemblyman Reverend John Hussey (1635-1707) of Hampton, New Hampshire, whose family had old links to Rhode Island; perhaps coincidentally, a John Hussey of Hampton is recorded purchasing large plots of land in Delaware in 1695. An intriguingly early and cryptic item. Autograph material of Clark and other Colony of Rhode Island governors is rarely seen.
