Rambles with the Switcher: An Opening in the Game of Checkers.
New York: W.T. Call, 1916. Hardcover. 16mo. Brown cloth with gilt front board lettering and checkerboard graphic. 72pp, (5pp). Checkerboard graphics. Near fine. Item #52425
Superb first edition -- tight, bright, gilt gleaming -- of the last title by this checkers master (1856-1917) who by day served as secretary and treasurer of electrical trade magazine publisher Gage Publishing Company of New York; he penned a handful of checkers titles and the standard checkers bibliography (up through 1907). Lovell rightly observes that it is "a literary rather than an analytical treatment of the Switcher opening. It is an erudite and readable little book -- undoubtedly a collector's item." Front pastedown bears the small gold foil printed name/address label of the "John Caldwell-Irving Windt Library of Checkers" of Dubuque, Iowa. Finest copy we have handled of this scarce title. LOVELL 70.
