The Blessed Thomas More: A Drama in Four Acts,
Edinburgh: Sands & Co., 1930. Paperback. 12mo. Stiff brown wrappers. 79pp. Very good. Quite faint binding wear, with spine ever-so-slightly sunned; tight and internally near fine. Item #52390
Attractive first edition of this play concerning Henry XIII's advisor (1478-1535) who refused to acknowledge the monarch as head of the Church of England and was executed as a result -- and proclaimed saint and martyr. Although no ownership signature appears, this copy belonged to Father Karl G. Schroeder (1910-99), long-time English professor known for Chaucer and Shakespeare courses at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa (1938-94). Schroeder directed stage productions at Loras and once directed "A Man for all Seasons" (the historical drama about Sir Thomas More and Henry VIII) and appears to have been considering producing Bowen's play; occasional inked margin comments are seemingly of a directorial nature.
