DOUGLAS: First and only edition of this facsimile set, limited to 500 sets, most in presentation envelope and only a small number in this deluxe hardbound portfolio format. Outstanding facsimile reproductions of the full run of this newspaper all with large and ornate pictorial masthead "which was issued," as introductory leaflet notes in subtitle, "to further the candidacy of Stephen A. Douglas for the Presidency of the United States." Begins with number 1, dated June 30, 1860 through number 20, dated November 17, 1860. Original issues of this campaign newspaper are rare, and this centennial facsimile set is itself quite scarce. LINCOLN: Facsimile reproductions of the complete file of "The Railsplitter" beginning with August 1, 1860 through October 27, 1860, each with large ornate pictorial masthead. Edition limited to 150 sets -- this copy with a signature of Newman tipped beneath the limitation statement of introductory leaflet, in which Newman also provides the 2-page history. Original issues of "The Railsplitter" are quite scarce and a full run virtually unattainable -- and this deluxe clothbound facsimile edition has itself become very uncommon. A clean, handsome copy. This pair of facsimile sets, both produced in 1960 and matching in size and format, were clearly intended to be complementary -- but a set of each in the deluxe editions are rarely found together.
