Autograph Letter Signed.
This Maine attorney and politico served as Bangor's second mayor and was the state's only non-consecutive 2-term governor (1839-39, 1842-42). Item #52254
ALS, 2pp (lettersheet), 5" X 8", Bangor, ME, 9 June 1860. Addressed to Joel Parker (1795-1875, New Hampshire jurist and long-time Harvard Law School professor). Near fine. "Your favor of the 6th inst was duly received. I find that I have no engagement which will prevent me from attending on the 19th as you request, provided I can be released so as to return by the Monday following -- I have engagements which require my presence here on Tuesday. As I have no definite idea of the time required to 'read & inwardly digest' the series of dissertations -- I must leave the matter to your judgment -- having reference to the time heretofore occupied in the examination by gentlemen in [ ? ] years...." Boldly and fairly legible penned in black ink and signed at the close. Parker, as Harvard Law School professor, seems to have asked a favor of fellow Harvard University alumni Kent, just appointed to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court the previous year -- seemingly, as one noted jurist to another, to help judge law school dissertations.
