The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon Upon Plates -- Taken from the Plates of Nephi.
Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1950. Hardcover. 12mo. Black cloth with gilt lettering. (6pp), 568pp. Near fine. Item #52161
Tight and attractive copy of this 2-column format edition. Routine copy with interesting provenance, for the rear pastedown bears a bold presentation inscription in black ink: "To -- / Hon. Adlai Stevenson, / Governor of Illinois. / Dec. 1952 -- / -- Complimentary --." Certainly this inscription from an anonymous donor was placed unusually on the rear pastedown instead of the front out of respect for the text. Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) was at this time the Democratic presidential candidate -- he would lose to Eisenhower a second time in 1956 -- and why this well-known Unitarian would be gifted the "Book of Mormon" is a bit of a puzzler. Intriguing, in any case.
