Pristine limited first edition (preceding the Doubleday trade edition) of this thick survey, a volume in their "First Edition Society" series. Choice autograph addition: Tipped to blank leaf facing the title page is a fine First Day Cover signed by Bruce Catton, 6½" X 3½", postally cancelled in Appomattox, Virginia on 9 April 1965 and with "First Day of Issue" so stamped. Single 5-cent "Appomattox" stamp at upper right and printed cachet at left depicting Grant and Lee seated together to sign the surrender document. Near the center, Catton signs boldly in blue ballpoint. Laid in is the publisher's "Notes from the Editors" leaflet about this title.
