Typed Note Signed / Unsigned Photograph.
One of the greatest heavyweight boxing champions of all time (1919-26), elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954; later in life he became a well-known New York restauranteur. Item #52073
TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", New York, NY, 17 August 1939. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Very good. Lightly age toned, with faint original folds. On handsome pictorial letterhead (partly printed in brown) depicting his famed Eighth Avenue restaurant "Jack Dempsey's," the ever-gracious Dempsey sends an admirer (who doubtless wrote because of Dempsey's upcoming comeback fights slated for 1940) "Many thanks for your nice letter and good wishes and want you to know I sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness in remembering me." Signed large and bold in his usual jet-black ink. Accompanied by a superb glossy 8" X 10" photograph, a 1964 head-and-shoulders half-length portrait of an older dapper Dempsey in suit and tie gazing intently.
Price: $295.00
