This attorney and politico served Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1927 to 1937, when Franklin Roosevelt appointed him Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a post he filled until 1971 -- making him the sixth longest-serving justice in that institution's history as well as one of the more influential. Large and bold full signature and "Alabama" in black ink on a buff heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Choice early example, obviously penned during his Senate career. Accompanied by a near fine original news agency black-and-white glossy 9" X 7" photograph. Printed caption neatly affixed to verso dates the image 31 August 1948, captions it "Supreme Court Justices Pay Their Last Respects" and describes the gents in suits and ties pictured full length: "Leaders of the nation were on hand today at New York's Riverside Church to pay final tribute to the late Charles Evans Hughes, former Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, who died last Friday night at the age of eighty-six. Five Supreme Court justices who attended the funeral are (left to right) Wiley Rutledge, Harold Hitz Burton, Stanley Forman Reed, Hugo Lafayette Black, and Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson...." A superb early signature and outstanding photograph.
