By These Words: Great Documents of American Liberty, Selected and Placed in Their Contemporary Settings.

New York: Rand McNally & Company, 1954. Hardcover. Illustrations by Edward A. Wilson. 8vo. Dark blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. xiv, 427pp. Frontispiece, line drawings. Very good. Faintest of binding wear and spine well sunned, though tight and internally fine. Item #52006

Sans jacket, but a tight and attractive first edition of this survey of historical documents ranging from the Mayflower Compact (1620) up through Eisenhower's first inaugural address (1953) -- and boldly signed by Angle in black ink on front flyleaf. From the library of Angle's friend Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate, and after him Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois. A great association copy.
