"This is one of a special edition of one thousand copies of this book," notes a tipped-in leaf following the copyright page, "distributed to the members of the Abraham Lincoln Association by arrangement with the publisher." Essays about William H. Herndon, Ward Hill Lamon, Jesse W. Weik, Ida Tarbell, Albert J. Beveridge, Carl Sandburg, Paul M. Angle and other Lincoln scholars. Though not so marked, this copy hails from the library of Lincoln-loving Adlai E. Stevenson III (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate, and after him Adlai E.
