The Children's Magazine. Volume XIII for 1841.

New York: The General Protestant Episcopal Sunday-School Union, 1841. Hardcover. 24mo. Quarter burgundy calf with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. 284pp. Illustrations. Very good. Mild rubbing to board edges (only); tight and nice, with light age toning and bit of sporadic foxing; lacks frontispiece. Item #51860

Handsome full issue, being 12 monthly issues (each issued first of the month) nicely bound. Each issue contains short stories, verse, essays and other moralizing bits of a religious nature. 15 steel engravings grace the issue, some full page, others partial. The first children's magazine in the U.S. bore this title, published by Hudson & Goodwin in Hartford, Connecticut, but lasted for only a few issues in 1789. In 1829 the General Protestant Episcopal Sunday-School Union resuscitated the title, and while many sources maintain it continued until the early 1860s, issues dated years later than this are found. This is a relatively early volume, in any case, quite charming and handleable.
