Herbert Hoover's vice president (1929-33) previously served Kansas as representative (1893-1907) and senator (1915-29) -- the first Native American to serve in Congress. Item #51651

TNS, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, D.C., 8 December 1931. Addressed to Fred P. Hohnaus. Very good. Mild age toning and bit of edgewear, with small mounting trace along top edge. On "The Vice President's Chamber" letterhead, Curtis transmits "a card bearing my autograph" (not present) and sends "kindest regards and every good wish for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...." Boldly signed in full in blue ink. Comes with an original glossy 10" X 8" news agency photograph depicting a smiling President Hoover seated at his desk surrounded by a dozen standing legislators. Very good. Printed text affixed to verso dates it 15 June 1929 and captions it "Hoover Signs Farm Measure; Providing $500,000,000 Relief Fund." Curtis stands behind Hoover's right shoulder and the text names some of the Congressman and describes the scene: ""At the White House today as President Hoover affixed his signature to measure and made it a law.... It embodies an authorization for an appropriation of $500,000,000 to be used by the Federal Farm Board in an effort to solve the surplus crop situation through a series of stabilization corporations and commodity councils." A superb vintage image, itself scarce and desirable.
