Tight and nice second edition of Algren's second novel, the tale of a Chicago boxer of Polish-American descent who turns to a life of crime. Front flyleaf bears an intriguing author inscription: "Memo to: J.B. / Subject: Culture / Wishing you few splits, / no railroads, and a / comfortable number of / strikes, from your / colleague and friend, / Nelson Algren / 7/3/42." The identity of J.B. -- perhaps a bowling buddy? -- remains unknown, but an interesting inscription nonetheless.
