Autograph Note Signed.

Autograph Note Signed.

This Union brigadier general is best remembered for founding Wisconsin's famed Iron Brigade of the Army of the Potomac, although health issues shortened his Civil War career; prior to that, he served as 17th Adjutant General of New York (1839-43) and worked as a journalist; after the war, he was appointed 5th United States Minister to the Papal States (1864-67). Item #51486

ANS, 1p, 8" X 10¼", Albany, NY, 25 February 1842. Addressed to "General." Very good. Neatly penned in brown ink on pale green stock, New York's adjutant general accepts an apology: "Yours of the 16 instant explaining the absence of several members of the Division Staff from the reviews of last fall was duly received. I am happy to add that the explanation is deemed to be satisfactory by the Comr in Chief." Boldly signed in full with title. A handsome early example. Comes with a superb heavy stock 6" X 8½" head-and-shoulders steel-engraved portrait of King in uniform within oval inset, undated but likely of 1860s vintage.

Price: $295.00
