Superb early printing of the opening two volumes of the prolific writer's magnum opus, wearing both superb jackets and slipcase -- and with choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf of the first volume is a Typed Note Signed from Baker, 1p, 5½" X 8¼", Amherst, MA, 5 May 1941. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Baker turned 71 years old on April 17, 1941, and sends gracious thanks for birthday greetings from an admirer. Signed boldly in full (with his actual name, not pseudonym). Fine. Six subsequent volumes followed, the last in 1939 (bringing Wilson's story up through 1918) awarded the 1940 Pulitzer Prize. American historian and journalist Ray Stannard Baker (1870-1946) penned a wide array of titles, but is often remembered for his friendship with Woodrow Wilson, about whom he authored many books; under the pseudonym "David Grayson" he wrote nine incredibly popular leisurely and laid back books about American rural life. An uncommon set in great condition and with scarce letter.
