Handsome first edition of these 29 speeches delivered between March 2, 1831 ("Parliamentary Reform") and June 1, 1853 ("Exclusion of Judges from the House of Commons") in a lovely custom binding with heraldic crest bearing motto "Virtus Vera Nobilitas" (Virtue Is True Nobility). In an irate preface Macaulay explains that only because a Mr. Vizetelly published an unauthorized and wildly inaccurate collection of his speeches ("Speeches, Parliamentary and Miscellaneous," 1853, 2 volumes) does he offer this selection of correct texts. Front flyleaf bears nautical-theme bookplate of Alfred Tomlinson and front pastedown bookplate of "Joh: Rigby" designed by noted bookplate artist Harry Soane in 1895. LOWNDES 1432.
