This Minnesota businessman turned his father's oil company -- which he became president of in 1930 -- into a major oil concern when he gained control of the Pacific Western Oil Corporation in 1932 and he gained control of Arab land where oil was struck in 1953; his fortune was estimated in excess of one billion dollars. Item #50719
Bold old age signature in black fineline on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, below which in another hand (but same ink) is penned "Autograph." Fine. The security-conscious Getty was understandably cautious of his signature appearing on a blank piece of paper, fearing its misuse in the wrong hands and added on to create a financial instrument. For this reasons it seems he would only sign a blank card if the word "Autograph" or any variation were penned just below his signature; this may also be why he preferred to sign near the top rather than the bottom of any such card. A superb example.
