Two Plays for Puritans.

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1966. Hardcover. Illustrations by George Him. Narrow 4to. Red cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, slipcase. xxxiv, 215pp. Color frontispiece, numerous illustrations (some color). Fine/near fine. Item #49059

Tight and bright LEC production, their 7th title in the 34th series, containing Shaw's 1897 play "The Devil's Disciple" and 1898 play "Caesar and Cleopatra." This unique copy bears an unusual autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a heavy stock 6" X 4" card on which is inked an imitation of Al Hirshfeld's caricature of a full-length Judith Anderson (1897-1992) wearing Roman attire, at the bottom of which the actress inscribes and signs "Good wishes / Judith Anderson" in blue ballpoint (she began the "G" in green fineline, then switched to ballpoint). In 1956 NBC, as part of its "Producers' Showcase" series, aired a television production of the play starring Cedric Hardwicke as Caesar, Claire Bloom as Cleopatra's and Judith Anderson as Cleopatra's nurse Ftatateeta. Colophon at rear cites limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #241) signed by illustrator Him. NEWMAN 381.
