Dam (1932-2022) was an academic and politician who served as 8th U.S. Deputy Secretary of State (1982-85) and 9th U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (2001-04), while recipient Malott (1926-2018) was a noted Chicago business leader, CEO of FMC Corporation, Republican politico and philanthropist.
