Later printing of this poem first published in 1880. "Translated and Adapted / By His Friend and Pupil / F.B. / (Sir Richard Francis Burton)" -- meaning Burton himself actually wrote this poem, taking a long-established Arabic verse form and making of it a kind of spiritual autobiography. Burton (1821-1890) was a legendary British explorer and soldier and influential writer and scholar.
