Item #48039 Lincoln Literature, Collections and Societies. R. Gerald McMURTRY.

Lincoln Literature, Collections and Societies.

N.p. United States Information Service, [1958]. Paperback. Small 4to (8" X 10½"). 8pp, stapled at upper left (as issued). Fine. Item #48039

Interesting production of this "public diplomacy" publicity agency which existed from 1953 to 1999 under the State Department. "USIS Feature" letterhead at top of first page, the remainder consisting of a simple double-spaced text printed on rectos only. U.S.I.S.'s intended mission was to publicize in various ways American cultural stories and events to a broad overseas audience. What is more American than Abraham Lincoln, so this is a prime example of that agency's p.r. output. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from McMurtry, 1p, 8½" X 11", Fort Wayne, IN, 6 July 1959. Addressed to noted Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Very good. On letterhead of "The Lincoln National Life Foundation" citing him as director, McMurtry chats cordially about "a Lincoln pilgrimage itinerary," elaborating on many specific stops along the way. Boldly signed simply "Gerald" in blue ink.
