Pale red cloth with black spine lettering and large map plate to front board. 286pp. Color frontispiece, full-page illustrations, color plates, small color foldout map. Very good. Attractive copy of this cryptic, bibliographically-challenged edition that may be a first edition -- unless it's not! The Panama Canal officially opened for traffic on August 15, 1914 and a quarter century later this momentous event was commemorated by the U.S. Post Office. This copy bears one such choice philatelic memento: Tipped to front flyleaf is a pristine First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled aboard the U.S.S. Charleston in the Canal Zone on 15 August 1939 and with "First Day of Issue" so stamped. Single 3-cent "25th Anniversary Panama Canal" stamp at upper right and leftmost third filled with a handsome map and text printed cachet. Never addressed.
