First edition, tight and pristine, of this collection of reminiscences about life in this northwest Illinois rural county. Asa M. Abbott (1820-89) was a pioneering farmer of Whiteside County whose home was a well-documented Underground Railroad site; his grandson was Louis A. Abbott (1891-1982) -- and his wife, Eunice M. Abbott (1898-1989), authored a local newspaper column and penned the first two reminiscences in this book. She inscribes the top of the front flyleaf to her husband in black fineline: "To Louie from Eunice -- Dec. 25 -- 1976." Laid in are several local newspaper articles about her.
