Item #46622 Signature / Unsigned Portrait. John C. MORGAN.

Signature / Unsigned Portrait.

After serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force, this Texan bomber pilot joined the 326th Bomb Squadron of the 92nd Bomb Group in England in 1943 and soon after took part in a mission that earned him the Medal of Honor; shot down later, he became the only POW who had already earned the MOH; a character in the 1948 novel and 1949 film "Twelve O'Clock High" is based on Morgan's exploits. Item #46622

High-quality heavy stock blind-bordered 6" X 4" card signed boldly by Morgan in pencil at center, with a printed "Medal of Honor Recipient" above and "Second Lieutenant John C. Morgan, USAAF / Europe / July 28, 1943" below. Fine. Accompanied by a fine 10½" X 13½" printed reproduction (1989) of a charcoal sketch by noted aviation artist J.G. Keck, a head-and-shoulders portrait of Morgan in uniform speaking into a microphone. This image was probably issued as a 16" X 24" with this signed portion underneath and was trimmed down to this size. A superb pair, in any case.
