Little Sketches of Famous Beef Cattle.

Columbus, OH: By the Author, 1904. Hardcover. 8vo. Grey cloth with brown lettering. 99pp. Near fine. Item #46545

Superb and tight first edition of this quite scarce "Who's Who" among cows -- 25 thumbnail biographies of beef cattle first published in the pages of "The Chicago Daily Drovers Journal" and here published in book form for the first time. Included are mini-bio's of, to name a few, "10th Duchess of Geneva" (Shorthorn bull), "Old Grannie" (Aberdeen-Angus bull), "Sir David" (Hereford bull) and "Scottish Standard" (Galloway bull). This copy belonged to Alfred N. Abbott (1862-1929), noted Illinois farmer, cattle and hog rancher, state legislator, president of the Illinois State Farmers' Institute and Deputy Commissioner of the Illinois Commission to the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. He boldly signs the front flyleaf in black ink, adding a street address and dating it "4/3/11." Truly scarce, and an exceptional copy with interesting provenance to boot. RAMPAGING HERD 1806.
