Tight, quite attractive second edition of this Chicago journalist's Civil War writings. First published in 1872 by D. Appleton & Company in New York (Griggs in Chicago listed as secondary publisher), this new edition (which nowhere indicates it was previously published) simply shortens the original title ("Mission Ridge and Lookout Mountain with Pictures of Life in Camp and Field") and moves the "Letter List" (table of contents) from the rear of the book to the front. As James I. Robertson Jr. notes, "this collection of monographs gives an exceptionally revealing picture of the 1863 campaigns around Chattanooga." Scarce in such clean condition -- and not ex-library as are so many copies. NEVINS I, 166.
