Nice first edition of this "Newstour" Pacific Rim travelogue by the British-born journalist, author and foreign policy authority (born 1944).On the front flyleaf he boldly inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint: "11/26/86 / Bob: / Your broad interest in / so many things on the Newstour / was a major stimulus to this book. / Many thanks! / David." From the library of Robert Malott (1926-2018), noted Chicago businessman, CEO of FMC Corporation, Republican politico, philanthropist -- and inveterate adventurer and world traveler who Aikman thanks in the book's preface. (Interestingly, this book has been to the North Pole! It accompanied Malott the following year on a trip he took to the North Pole with astronaut Jim Lovell, and a special North Pole James A. Lovell cancellation dated 13 April 1987 appears below Aikman's flyleaf inscription.) Aikman's business card is neatly tipped to the half-title page, and facing this is a Typed Note Signed from Malott's father, Deane W. Malott, 1p, 7¼" X 10", Ithaca, NY, 14 May 1987. Addressed to Bob. Near fine. On imprinted personal letterhead, Malott tells his son "I read aloud to Mother Aikman's Pacific Rim, every word of it, and how we enjoyed it. What a privilege to have been on the trip. A great experience." Signed simply "Dad" in black ballpoint. Deane Malott (1898-1996) was an educator who served as assistant dean at Harvard Business School, chancellor of University of Kansas and president of Cornell University.
