This French-born American conductor, who had his own concert series in Paris and also conducted the Ballet Russe orchestra and served as music director at the Sorbonne, became a mainstay of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for more than a quarter century, their longest-serving music director ever; in later years he conducted the Denver Symphony Orchestra.
