Henry Mills Hurd: The First Superintendent of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins Press, 1920. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering. 147pp. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Item #40956
A tight, decent first edition of this biography of the psychiatry professor turned renowned medical administrator (1843-1927). Interesting twist: From the library of John Oscar Skinner (1845-1932), a contract surgeon with the U.S. Army awarded the Medal of Honor for valor in the Indian Wars in Oregon; he accompanied General Crook into the Navajo-Apache country and served as Geronimo's custodian during that chief's incarceration at Fort Marion, Florida. His blue "Dr J O Skinner / Chambersburg / US Army PA" bookplate graces the front pastedown and he pencils a large question mark alongside a paragraph on page 75 having to do with a comment made by the surgeon-general of the U.S. Army. Interesting copy.
