On stationery with the blind-embossed log of Pall Mall's Athenaeum Club, Hughes offers commentary onn autograph collection: "I used to collect myself but gave it up long ago, partly from finding how many of my heroes dwindled sadly in my judgment as years went on. I fear the time will come when you will also weed your collection & amongst others will wonder how you could have made the present investment. But notwithstanding my foreboding I am very truly yours...." Handsomely penned in brown ink.
