A tight and nice second printing of this essay collection featuring John Dos Passos, Arthur Lehman Goodhart, Reinhold Niebuhr, Robert Lowell, Paul H. Douglas and David C. Mearns. Choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Mearns (1899-1981), noted Chief of the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress for many years, a well-known Lincoln scholar who edited "The Lincoln Papers" (1948), "Three Presidents and Their Books" (1955) and "Largely Lincoln" (1961), among others. 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1964 April 1. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-93), noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "The Library of Congress" letterhead, he notes: "Having just read, with my usual avidity, your column in the latest Lincoln Herald, I venture to send you the enclosed." Signed simply "Dave" in black ink.
