First edition. Poet, playwright and Librarian of Congress Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982) provides the forward to this tribute to his mother, an Illinois educator, college professor and president of Rockford College. Interestingly, this copy came from the library of a friend of his, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor, U.N. ambassador and two-time presidential candidate. MacLeish met Stevenson during World War Two when Stevenson worked for the State Department and was involved in the creation of what became the United Nations in 1946. Stevenson has signed the front flyleaf large and bold in full in pencil, dating it 1949.
