Towards a National Taste: The Fine Arts and Travel in American Magazines from 1783 to 1815

Ann Arbor: University Microfilms International, 1977. Paperback. 8vo. Stiff black wrappers with paper labels. ix, 233pp (all rectos only). Near fine. Spine label (only) age toned. Item #30543

First of this edition of the 1966 Washington State University doctoral dissertation, published in this typed double-spaced rectos-only format. Dissertations in this format tend to be published in extremely small print runs, making them scarce and desirable. Unlike most dissertations, however, the University of Hawaii Press did publish a hardbound trade version in 1975, bearing a different subtitle: "America's Quest for Aesthetic Independence." Highly unusual that a trade edition precede a microfilm edition! Whether the two texts differ substantially would require a side-by-side comparison. Although the trade edition thus precedes this softbound version, the University Microfilms edition could correctly claim the original version of the text. From the collection of musicologist and conductor/director Paul Clinton Echols (1944-94).
