Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. Hardcover. 12mo. Brown heavily blind-embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration. xiii, 227pp, (2pp). Very good. Bit of wear at head and tail of spine, else tight, clean and nice; 1863 nonauthorial ownership signature on front flyleaf (brown ink on brown endpaper, thus barely discernible). Item #26533
Exceptionally tight and attractive first edition of what James I. Robertson Jr. criticized as "Too feminine and prejudiced to be of value; treats of her husband's mounted bodyguard." The controversial John C. Fremont (1813-90) -- military officer, explorer, senator, presidential candidate -- succeeded in driving the Confederates out of southwest Missouri. Wife Jessie (1924-1902) was the daughter of Missouri statesman Thomas Hart Benton and a noted writer and activist in her own right. NEVINS I, 91.
