This pitcher debuted with the Cincinnati Reds, where he played until 1940 until joining the Boston Braves (1943-44, 1946-49) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1945-46); on August 10, 1944 he pitched the shortest night game in baseball history (58 pitches, 1 hour 15 minutes); in 1945 his earned run average was 3.00 and he was named to the AP National League All-Star team; and in 1948 he played in two World Series games.
