First edition, bearing a choice presentation inscription from the author in blue ballpoint on the front flyleaf: "To my very dear friends / Nancy & Adlai / With love from / Barbara." Ward, the Baroness Jackson of Lodsworth (1914-81), was a highly influential British economist and author who specialized in developing country issues. She lived in West Africa in the 1950s and often visited India, and developed the notion put forth in this significant book that Western countries needed to assist the development of poorer countries. She befriended many American policy makers such as John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Adlai E. Stevenson II -- to whose son (Illinois senator, 1969-81) and his wife this unique copy is handsomely inscribed.
