One of the last of the singing cowboys, known as "Mister Cowboy" and "The Arizona Cowboy," Allen starred in cowboy films of the 1950s and is credited with composing 300 songs, among them "Crying in the Chapel" (1953). Uncommon glossy oversize IPS, heavy stock 16" X 20", Kankakee, IL, 1961. Very good. Image is superb and unflawed, but ink contrast is good only. Handsome head-and-shoulders closeup of a smiling Allen in plaid shirt, scarf and white ten-gallon hat, inscribed enormously in the light area above his hat in blue ballpoint: "To Donald / My Best Always / Rex Allen / 1961 / 'Kankakee.'" Very attractive and unusual despite mediocre ink contrast -- likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose, but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso.
