This career Army officer participated in both world wars, but is remembered for his role in the Eisenhower administration; he began as deputy assistant to the president in 1953, advanced to assistant to the president in 1958 and replaced Sherman Adams in 1958, acting as Eisenhower's chief of staff. Handsome official Army-issue head-and-shoulders portrait in full uniform, boldly inscribed along the lower margin "To Peter Thayer -- / With best wishes -- / Wilton B Persons / The Assistant to the President." Not dated, but clearly accomplished in office.
