The celebrated English Earl served three times as foreign secretary and was instrumental in arranging the Declaration of Paris (1856) ending the Crimean War and establishing the rules of maritime warfare. ALS, 1p, 4½" X 7", Grosvenor Crescent, 1844 June 18. Addressed to "My dear Sir." Near fine. As Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Clarendon "...cannot absent myself from a Committee tomorrow morning. It wd. be much more agreeable to me to attend the Examination for which you have had the goodness to send me a ticket. I enclose 50 as my contribution toward building the new Normal Schools....."
