Memorial Addresses on the Life and Character of Samuel Sullivan Cox, (A Representative from New York), Delivered in the House of Representatives and in the Senate.
Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1890. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blind-embossed black cloth with gilt lettering. 264pp. Engraved frontispiece. Very good. Very minor edgewear; slight abrasion near foot of spine. Item #12253
A tight and handsome first edition of this eulogy collection occasioned by the death of this well-known American politician and diplomat nicknamed "Sunset" (1824-89) who served Congress both from Ohio (1857-65) and New York (1873-89) with a brief interval as minister to the Ottoman Empire. While a signed copy of this would of course raise eyebrows, here's the next best thing: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a choice 4" X 2½" lined slip on which Cox boldly penned in brown ink: "Here it is! / SS Cox." -- an appropriate sentiment as the sun set on "Sunset" Cox. Discreet ex-library copy, with very few markings -- bookplate on front pastedown indicates this was given to a public library in 1895 by an Illinois representative, R.R. Hitt (1834-1906).
